Clothes Too Tight? Make Them Fit Again With One Simple Shape

Have you ever pulled on your favourite pair of trousers only to discover the waistband won’t quite do up? Or found a dress you still love, but it suddenly feels too snug?

Before you give up on those clothes or start shopping for replacements, there’s another option.

In my latest video, I’m showing you how one simple shape, a triangle insert, can completely transform the fit of clothes that have become too tight.

Why Triangle Inserts Work

A triangle insert is one of my favourite ways to add extra room exactly where it’s needed.

Whether you’re dealing with a waistband that’s become uncomfortable, a fitted bodice that’s too snug or a blouse that needs a little more breathing room, adding fabric in a triangular shape allows the garment to expand naturally while still looking intentional.

The best part?

Every project featured in this video was my very first attempt at using triangle inserts, including the brand-new waistband rescue that opens the video.

Four Ways to Make Clothes Bigger

1. Make a Tight Waistband Bigger

A favourite pair of refashioned lace bell-bottom trousers no longer fit comfortably around my waist, so I added a small triangle insert at the centre back to give them a few extra centimetres without changing the look from the front.

2. Add Room to a Tight Dress Bodice

Sometimes all a fitted dress needs is a little extra space through the bust. Two small triangle inserts at the side seams made this dress wearable again while keeping its original style.

3. Make a Tight Blouse Bigger

Instead of adding panels at the sides, this blouse received one large triangle insert through the centre back, giving it a completely new lease on life.

4. Rescue a Tight Maxi Dress

The final project is the biggest transformation of them all. A dramatic triangle insert running all the way up the back of a maxi dress added room through the bust, waist and hips, proving just how versatile this simple technique can be.

Your Body Changes. Your Clothes Can Too.

Bodies change throughout our lives. Weight fluctuates. Styles evolve. Comfort becomes more important. None of that means your favourite clothes have to end up in the donation pile.

Around here, we make our clothes fit our bodies, not the other way around.

Learning a few simple alteration techniques can save you money, reduce textile waste and help you keep wearing the pieces you already love.
