Oversized Shirt Refashion | Turn 1 Shirt Into 3 New Pieces

Got an oversized shirt that’s just hanging in your closet taking up space?

Before you donate it, chop it up!

In today’s refashion, I’m transforming one oversized button-down shirt into three completely different pieces. A no-sew collar necklace, a cute off-the-shoulder top, and a scrappy necktie made from the leftover fabric.

Because if we’re going to refashion something, we might as well get every last bit of creative potential out of it!

Materials Needed

  • Oversized button-down shirt
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine (optional as hand stitching works just as well)
  • Thread
  • Pins or clips
  • Iron

DIY No-Sew Collar Necklace

The first project is also the quickest.

Simply cut the collar away from the shirt and you’ve instantly created a statement necklace. Seriously. That’s it.

Wear it as-is, embellish it with beads, embroidery, patches, paint, or turn it into something completely different.

One of my favourite ways to use old collars is in my scrappy monster projects. Their shape makes them perfect for creating funny little creatures from fabric scraps that might otherwise end up in the bin.

Refashion an Oversized Shirt Into an Off-the-Shoulder Top

Next up is the main transformation.

Oversized shirts have so much fabric to work with, making them ideal candidates for easy refashions. By removing the upper portion of the shirt and creating a gathered neckline, this oversized button-down becomes a comfortable off-the-shoulder top with a completely different vibe.

The best part?

It still keeps many of the original shirt details while looking like an entirely new garment.

Make a Scrappy Necktie From the Leftovers

One of my favourite parts of refashioning is finding ways to use the scraps.

Rather than tossing the leftover fabric, I turned it into a coordinating necktie. It’s a simple project, but it’s also a great reminder that fabric scraps can become accessories, embellishments, patchwork details, or entirely new projects.

There Are No Mistakes In Refashioning

During this project I shared one of my favourite refashioning philosophies:

There are no mistakes in refashioning, just opportunities to make something even cooler.

Sometimes a project doesn’t go exactly as planned. That’s okay.

Refashioning isn’t about perfection. It’s about experimentation, creativity, and learning to see possibilities where other people see problems.

Why Oversized Shirts Are Refashioning Gold

Oversized shirts are one of the easiest garments to find at thrift stores, swaps, garage sales, and in the backs of our own closets.

They’re packed with usable fabric, usually inexpensive, and beginner-friendly to work with.

Whether you’re making clothes fit your body better or transforming them into something completely different, oversized shirts are one of the most versatile items you can refashion.
