#ThriftyThursday Copycat: Carol Kane + upcycled flower pin tutorial

Carol Kane is definitely one of my fave inspiring performers. Her perfect comedic timing and hilarious voice had me hooked as a kiddo in the 80’s and her recent portrayal  of Lillian Kaushtupper on The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt was simply divine!

What’s your favourite Carol Kane role?

I would love to show you the full comparison photo of this thrifty celeb copycat however, even though my copycat looks fall under Fair Use, I was threatened with legal action and a demand for “compensation damages” by the copyright holder of the image of Carol Kane used for this educational thrifty style inspiration.

Fair use gives users the right to use copyrighted material without permission under certain circumstances. If a use is fair, the user need not notify or seek permission from the copyright holder. Copyright rights are limited by the doctrine of “fair use,” under which certain uses of copyrighted material for, but not limited to, criticism, commentary, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, or research may be considered fair.

My thrifty celeb copycat looks fall under the Fair Use category as they provide commentary, teaching and most certainly do NOT “harm the copyright owner’s ability to profit from his or her original work by serving as a replacement for demand for that work”.

It is incredibly sad and frustrating that small creators, like myself, who receive very little payment from blogging (or none at all) are constantly targeted for copyright infringement and threatened with legal action for attempting to educate and entertain while following the legal guidelines of fair use while huge, wealthy content farm sites are free to copy & use my images without permission, attribution, notification or fear of any threat of legal action from this tiny content creator, pfffft!

My thrifty celeb copycat comparison images have been copied and shared on numerous internationally well-known content and entertainment sites and I’m quite sure that none of them have received any threatening e-mails as it’s much easier to bully those without any power, financial resources or support than it is to attempt to intimidate and extort multi-million/billion dollar tech and media companies.

Additionally, this post was published in 2019 and has very few views. Below is a snapshot of the traffic it has received in the last 90 days – only 4 views from May – July/2022 = one view in May/2022, two views in June/2022 and one view as of July 21, when I received the threatening e-mail and subsequently deleted the original photo, uploaded my redesigned version and added the story of the events above.

4 Views on a 3 year old post on a tiny DIY blog definitely does not create any income at all and absolutely does not impact the potential finances of the copyright holder in any way whatsoever.

Thankfully I created & fully own the rights to the rest of the images in this post so keep scrolling to check out the preloved outfit info, refashions + my upcycled flower pin tutorial then join my Gone Thrifting group to share your own ecofashion!

Are you loving my version of that fluffy floral brooch? Here’s how I made it:

I grabbed  a pink & green bathpuff + coordinating thread & a safety pin. (your trusty glue gun will work as well)

Step one: Cut the pink bathpuff then gather it up into a basic flower shape & tie with thread.

Step two: Repeat step one with the green bathpuff, make sure it’s a bit larger than the flower.

Step three: Stitch (or glue) the flower & leaf pieces together.

Step four: Stitch (or glue) the safety pin to the back & enjoy your fluffy flower brooch!
