Ever stop wearing a favourite piece because the waistband is too tight, too loose or just plain uncomfortable?
Before you toss it, donate it or spend money replacing it, there’s a good chance you can fix the problem yourself. In this video, I’m sharing five simple waistband fixes that can help you get more wear out of the clothes you already own, whether you sew regularly or have barely any experience with a needle and thread:
1. Remove an Elastic Waist from a Romper (No Sewing)
Some elastic waistbands do more harm than good. If they’re too tight or create an awkward fit, you can remove the elastic without sewing and instantly make your romper much more comfortable. I also gave mine a bright fuchsia dye makeover and added my Refashionista Sheri patch for a completely new look.
2. Make a Waist Smaller with Decorative Waistband Clips
If your waistband is just a little too loose, decorative waistband clips are a quick and stylish solution. They only require a few hand stitches and can easily be removed later if your size changes.
3. Make a Waist Bigger with a Triangle Insert
When a favourite garment becomes too snug, a simple triangle insert can add just enough extra room to make it wearable again. You can sew it by machine or by hand, making it a great beginner-friendly alteration.
4. Replace Loose Waistband Elastic
Elastic doesn’t last forever. If your waistband has stretched out over time, replacing the elastic is often much easier than replacing the entire garment.
5. Remove a Thick Elastic Waist
Some waistbands are simply uncomfortable. Removing bulky elastic can completely change how a garment feels and make it much more enjoyable to wear.
Don’t Replace It. Refashion It.
One of the biggest myths in fashion is that if something no longer fits, you need to buy something new.
In reality, many fit problems can be solved in just a few minutes with simple alterations like the ones in this video.
Your clothes should fit your body, not the other way around.
