What thoughts cross your mind when you see someone in your field enjoying what appears to be effortless success?
They got a lucky break? Have the “right” connections? Know influential people?
I can totally relate and from my own experience I know it’s sometimes very difficult to squash those jealous thoughts when you feel you work so hard and yet, it seems, achieve so little when you compare yourself to others.
Whenever these thoughts invade my refashionista brain I answer them with something I like to call Blogging: The Iceberg of Success:
That brilliant graphic by the awesome Sylvia Duckworth illustrates exactly what every single successful blogger has persevered through to achieve their goals.
The iceberg theory of success can be applied to just about everyone and is simple to understand:
Less than 10% of an iceberg is visible above water = the successful outcome of hard work
Over 90% of an iceberg is submerged below the surface = the massive effort, time, energy, work and dedication required to reach that successful outcome
The next time you start to compare yourself to others in your field and that feeling of inadequacy rears its ugly head remember the iceberg of success and believe that your hard work and persistence will eventually lead you to the success you most certainly deserve!
