6 Easy Button-Down Shirt DIYs You Can Make Instead of Donating Them

Before you get rid of that old button-down shirt…

One oversized shirt can become so much more than another donation. Whether it’s too big, out of style, stained or simply hasn’t been worn in years, it still has plenty of potential.

One of my favourite things about refashioning is that it completely changes the way you look at your wardrobe. Instead of asking, “Should I keep this?” you start asking, “What could this become?”

Today I’m sharing 6 easy button-down shirt DIYs that prove just how versatile one of the most common wardrobe staples can be:

1. Turn an oversized shirt into a lightweight hooded jacket

Why buy a new layering piece when you can make one?

By cropping an oversized men’s button-down, removing the collar and using the leftover fabric to create a simple hood, you can make a lightweight jacket that’s perfect for cool summer evenings or layering throughout the year.

It’s a completely different look from the original shirt while still making use of most of the existing garment.

2. Create a one-of-a-kind patchwork dress

If you’ve collected a few shirts over the years, this project is a fantastic way to combine them into something entirely new.

Mix colours, patterns and textures to create a statement dress that’s impossible to find in stores.

3. Combine a T-shirt and a button-down for a 90s-inspired top

Sometimes two forgotten garments can become one new favourite.

This mash-up combines the comfort of a T-shirt with the structure of a button-down to create an easy, relaxed top with plenty of personality.

4. Transform a men’s pyjama shirt into a puff sleeve wrap top

Oversized pyjama tops often have beautiful fabric but an unflattering shape.

With a few simple changes, they can become a feminine wrap top that’s perfect for dressing up or down.

5. Give an old shirt a colourful makeover with dye and sock sleeves

One of my favourite things about refashioning is experimenting.

A little dye and a pair of socks completely transform this shirt into something fresh, fun and full of character.

6. Add vintage hankie bell sleeves

Vintage handkerchiefs deserve to be seen, not hidden away in a drawer.

Turning them into dramatic bell sleeves creates a beautiful one-of-a-kind detail while giving both the shirt and the hankies a new life.

Why I love refashioning button-down shirts:

Button-down shirts are one of the easiest garments to refashion because they already include so many useful features:

✂️ Ready-made button plackets

✂️ Finished cuffs

✂️ Quality fabrics

✂️ Plenty of material to work with

They’re the perfect starting point whether you’re completely new to refashioning or already comfortable with a sewing machine.

Use what you have to make what you want

Every project in this collection started with clothing that could easily have been overlooked.

Instead of buying something new, try looking at your wardrobe with fresh eyes. You might already have everything you need to create your next favourite outfit.

If you’re ready to build even more confidence with refashioning, my Wardrobe Revolution will teach you how to see the hidden potential in every piece you own.
