I Recreated My Original 90s Modelling Looks Using Only What I Already Had

Recently I started noticing 90s fashion trends cycling back around AGAIN and honestly? It cracked me up a little because I already wore this stuff 30 years ago.

Back in the 90s, I worked as a model and spent a LOT of time in tiny denim vests, sparkly dresses, oversized mesh hoodies, and more questionable fashion choices than I’d care to admit.

But instead of running out and buying all the “new” versions of these recycled trends, I decided to do what any Refashionista would do and recreate my original looks using what I already had in my wardrobe and refashion stash.

Because before you buy into another trend cycle, go check your own closet first. You might already have exactly what you need hiding in plain sight.

DIY Then & Now – Recreating My 90s Looks

For this video, I recreated 3 different looks inspired by my original modelling photos using a mix of:
– no sew DIYs
– easy sew refashions
–  simple upsizing techniques
– sustainable fashion hacks

And the best part? None of these projects require perfection, professional sewing skills, or expensive supplies.

If I can do it, YOU can too.

No Sew DIY Denim Vest

The first recreation was inspired by one of my old denim-on-denim looks featuring a tiny fitted vest. Instead of buying a new one, I simply transformed an old denim jacket into a DIY vest with a quick no sew refashion. Proof that sometimes the easiest solution is the best one.

Easy DIY Faux Sequin Dress

Next up was a sparkly mini dress recreation inspired by one of my original 90s glamour shots. This project was surprisingly simple and only required a couple of seams to create the same overall vibe and silhouette. Perfection is the enemy of good enough, and honestly? Sometimes “close enough” turns out even better than trying to perfectly copy the original.

How To Make A Hoodie Bigger Using A Blanket

The final recreation might actually be my favourite because it perfectly shows how trends cycle back around. I spotted a tiny hoodie on a discount rack that instantly reminded me of one I wore in the 90s, so instead of buying something brand new, I used a blanket to upsize and recreate the original look myself. This project is a great beginner-friendly example of simple upsizing and creative clothing transformation.

My First Ever Refashion At 38 Years Old

One of the most important moments in this video is when I share my very first refashion project ever.

I didn’t grow up sewing. I didn’t go to fashion school. I didn’t magically know how to do any of this. I taught myself to sew at 38 years old using an inherited vintage sewing machine.

And trust me…my first projects were FAR from perfect. But that’s exactly the point. Too many people think creativity belongs only to naturally talented people or professionals, and that simply isn’t true.

You learn by trying. You improve by doing. And you absolutely do NOT need perfection to start creating something amazing.

Fashion Trends Come And Go But Creativity Never Goes Out Of Style

This whole project reminded me that fashion is cyclical, but creativity is timeless. You do not need to constantly buy new things to participate in trends or express yourself creatively. Sometimes the best thing you can do is look at what you already own with fresh eyes.

So now I want to know:

Which recreation was your favourite?
And did I still pull these looks off 30 years later?

Let me know in the comments!
