Upcycled Space Girl Costume

The absolute best thing about being a refashionista mommy is having the groovy ability to bring my kiddo’s quirky costume ideas to life!

Since scoring a pair of silver LED sneakers at the thrift shop last year my munchkin has been not so subtly mentioning her space girl costume idea whenever it popped into her adorable little head so I’ve been collecting whatever I could find at swaps & charity shops to make her galactic gal outfit a reality for Halloween:

To create the space girl outfit I grabbed a silver dress I’d had in my stash for ages, a black top of hers, the sleeves from a silver sweater that I’d previously refashioned into legwarmers + some other silvery bits I’d picked up along the way.

First I handstitched the silver sleeves over top of the arms of the black top.

Then grabbed a sleeveless dress with the kiddo’s ideal length and placed it on top of the silver dress with the hems lined up.

And chopped off the dress straps.

I cut off the excess fabric from the top of the dress and then handstitched the shortened straps back on.

Hooray! The space girl outfit was nearly done!

Next I grabbed the light up headband we scored at a swap, a few styrofoam balls + some silver bits and bobs from the xmas box.

I removed all of the bulky ribbons from the headband.

Then painted it with silver glitter and stuck on a few pieces of xmas garland + a silver flower too!

To create the antennae I simply painted 4 styrofoam balls silver,

hot glued them to each end of a silver pipe cleaner,

and then wrapped and stuck them around the headband!

A silver xmas tree skirt works fab as a galactic collar!

Metallic makeup and silver lashes complete the space girl look!

The headband looks awesome with those blinky LEDs!

And the space girl costume is ready to blast off!
