‘Tis definitely the season for creative upcycling and as I wanted to do something a wee bit more special than store-bought for the kiddo’s advent calendar this year, I sorted through my hoarded cardboard stash, raided the recycling bin and created this fantastically re-usable bit of awesomeness:
Here’s how to whip up your own countdown to Christmas before December 1st:
Snag 24 toilet rolls (or chopped paper towel rolls), a large piece of cardboard, paints and a cutting tool.
Grab a large circular something-or-other and trace the shape onto the cardboard.
Grab a smaller circular something-or-other and trace around it in the centre of the larger circle.
Cut out the wreath shape.
Paint the wreath and all of the tubes.
Once completely dry, fold in the ends of each tube to create your advent calendar containers.
Number the folded tubes.
Add a hanger to the top of the cardboard wreath.
Arrange your tubes in random number order on the wreath and snag your trusty glue gun (or regular all-purpose glue) and stick it all together.
I miscalculated my wreath size but quickly solved the problem by attaching a couple of lengths of wide, sturdy ribbon to the bottom of the wreath to house the remaining containers.
Decorate the wreath then pop a little gift or treat into each container, close them up and hang it on the wall.
The best part?
You can personalize the contents to suit whomever is opening the calendar + reuse it year after year!
