The only thing easier than transforming garments with dye is giving them a de-colouring soak in bleach!
Snag my top tips & techniques for bleaching clothing below and creatively no-sew embellish your wardrobe with bits from around your house!
1. Learn from my mistake(s) and don’t attempt to bleach synthetic fabrics. Polyester will slowly turn a gross streaky yellow colour and can even melt. Nylon, wool, silk and spandex will simply disintegrate from the harsh chemicals.
2. For guaranteed success, I recommend sticking with totally natural fabrics such as cotton, linen or denim for the bleach techniques.
3. Always keep an eye on your soaking garments and be sure to check the bleaching process frequently to prevent an unwanted colour result or damaged fabrics.
Dunk the bottom of the garment into a 1 part bleach to 3 parts warm water mixture, let it soak for about 20 minutes and then carefully fold the rest of the item into the mixture, leave until your desired colour is reached then launder as usual.
Accordion fold the garment then roll and twist it up into a modern art sculpture and secure it in place with rubber bands.Toss it into a 1 part bleach to 3 parts warm water mixture and watch as it instantly begins to change colour!
Fill a plastic spray bottle with an equal parts bleach & water mixture, grab your garment and line it with a plastic bag to prevent the bleach from leaking through the fabric. Spray your desired areas and once you’re happy with the colour give it a rinse and then wash normally.
