The Bewitched Bedsheet Tunic

August 24, 2011

Why is this bewitched? Because it took a little magic to create!

…meh…not my best witticism but it’ll do…onto the how-to!

Take an old jersey – or cotton – bed sheet. (Mine was a fitted sheet so I had to chop off all of the elastic edges) Cut the length to 140cm & the width to 70cm. Fold it in half & lay it on a flat surface with the fold at the top. You’re sheet should now be 70cm x 70cm.

Grab a loose-fitting t-shirt & center it on your sheet with the neck at the folded edge. Pin the sheet at each side of the t-shirt neck & underarm of the sleeves – or just use my measurements in the photo. *You’ll eventually sew down from the side pins creating the tunic…but first…

Find the center of your neckline pins at the folded edge of your sheet. Measure 14cms down from the center point and pin or mark with a pencil dot. If you’d like a deeper neckline simply mark lower.

Cutting through only the top layer of the sheet snip from one of your neckline pins down to the center mark, then up to the other neckline pin & finally back across the folded edge to the original pin. Et Voila! A lovely V-neck!

Time to stitch the sides together, sew down from the pins to create the tunic.

As my sheet was made of jersey I could have left the neckline, sleeves & hem with raw edges but decided to use my foldy-foot (actual name: rolled hem foot) to finish off the tunic.

Onto the belt: Rip 3 strips of fabric from the remains of your bed sheet. Mine were about 2m long.

*If your sheet is jersey, stretch each strip so it folds in on itself. Tie the ends of the strips together and braid…and braid…and braid.

Once the strips are all braided together tie a knot in the open end.

Turn your tunic right side out, add the belt & your done….however, I went a few steps further…

I folded my tunic lengthwise like an accordion, twisted it up & tied it in 2 knots…

…added some black dye…

…and now it’s done! As they say in Germany: Fantastisch! Geil!

and the back view is groovy too!
