The global fashion industry has been turning a blind eye to their polluting, wasteful and human rights abusing practices for far too long. It’s time to stop supporting brands and designers with questionable manufacturing policies and shop ethically but with green washing on the rise, how can you know which labels to choose?
Good On You helps you find fashion labels with ethical & sustainable manufacturing practices and step away from the ones that don’t. Good on You researches brands, gathers all of the information together and uses expert analysis to give each one an easy-to-understand score. They are one of the world’s leading resources for fashion brand ratings and even have a convenient app for discovering brand ratings while you shop!
How it works:
Good on You explores each brand’s impact on workers across the supply chain. These include their individual policies and practices regarding child labour, forced labour, worker safety, freedom of association (the right to join a union) and payment of a living wage. They also take a brand’s supplier relationships and auditing practices into consideration as well.
Good On You ethical brand ratings build on the impressive work done by certification schemes and other independent assessment projects such as Fair Trade, OEKO-TEX and the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). However as only a small minority of brands actually offer certified products there is an absolute need to look further into the standard systems brands may choose to follow and the other actions that they claim to take. Good on You takes into account the information from over 50 certification schemes, standard systems and independent rating groups as well as the assessment methods that are readily available for use by brands.
Where an issue is not fully covered by a standard system or rating, Good on You researches the brand’s own public statements and only rely on those that meet certain “reliability and usefulness” conditions. They specifically look for brand statements that make relevant and specific claims which, if false, would breach advertising laws regarding misleading information.
The Rating System Explained:
For a brand to be recognized as ‘Good On You rated’ they need to have rated either Good or Great on the rating system. Look out for the ‘Good on you rated’ stamp when you’re browsing online stores for assurance that you are shopping ethically:
Unsurprisingly, most expensive designer brands boast about their sustainability yet have absolutely zero proof to back up their claims. Search for high end labels with failing & incredibly low grades here – sadly there’s loads more than those pictured below!
Stop falling into the trap of consumerism, think about how your clothing and products are made and take a few seconds to research a brand before buying with Good On You.
