Help me refashion these vintage salt & sugar sacks

I received these fabulous vintage salt & sugar sacks for Christmas and although I do have a few ideas about what to create with them (throw pillows, wall hangings, a mini quilt, a patchwork messenger bag) I thought I’d once again ask my fellow DIY divas for your creative ideas:

How to refashion/upcycle these vintage salt & sugar sacks

These thin cotton sacks are all in fairly good condition with no rips. The largest measures 37cm x 25cm and the smallest is 32cm x 18cm.

What would you create with them?

I love getting a piece of glass cut to cover small side tables or a kitchen table and then put small items or these cute bags under the glass so they are protected. Or if they are sturdy enough they would make a cute set of decorative pillows.

    1. I’ll now be on the lookout for some groovy glass (or glass topped gear) at the charity shop!

Hey-lo! I would use the smaller ones as patchwork for a kitchen curtain with some lace.. And i agree with the serving tray. I made one for a couple I know by using a large frame, the fabric was stretched and placed under glass and the whole thing glued together (felt glued to the bottom.) It was a wedding present for breakfast in bed..it could also work as accent in the kitchen. Great finds! Good luck!!! Thanks for being awesome.

    1. That sounds super cool and wicked useful! (Thanks for the fab compliment!)

They would be cute incorporated into an apron.

    1. Cute and kitchen quirky!

  4. A patch skirt with a bright orange liner that extends out the bottom.

    1. I’ll be having a dig through my stash for cool liner fabric! Great idea!

I could see them as an insert for the back of a jean jacket, a backpack/bag if the fabric is sturdy enough, or maybe frame them and hang them on the wall.

    1. All fab ideas brandy! They’d definitely make some groovy kitchen wall decor! 😀

  6. Very cool. I’ve seen chairs reupholstered with something similar-fabric grain sacks, although they are probably much bigger than sugar sacks. The ideas you have so far are nice. I’d also maybe incorporate one into some sort of serving tray. Not sure how-modge podge maybe?

    1. Love the upholstery idea but unfortunately they’re pretty small and the fabric is super thin – I just may have to hold on to the biggest one until I find a little stool to recover 😉 I’m sure doubling up the fabric with scrap denim backing would make it sturdy enough to cover a stool!

Btw., for upholstery purpose I agree with the lack of thickness/strength of the material in use.
YET: doing the upholstery in dual colours = weaker fabric perhaps used on the back; new(er), stronger ones for the ‘more wear and tear area’?

        LG, Gerlinde

        1. Great points Gerlinde! 😀

  7. Patch pockets on a skirt or pant.

    1. Adorable idea Cathy! 😀
