My Upcycled DIY Pinata(s)

If you follow me on instagram & facebook you’ll already know that I had planned to create a glorious Lumpy Space Princess pinata for the munchkin’s 4th birthday extravaganza.

However, as the wonderful world of upcycling never goes completely as planned, I ended up raiding the recycling bin and using 2 entirely different methods to create 2 entirely different pinatas.

Here’s what I did:

After gathering my oh-so-traditional DIY pinata materials (newspaper strips, balloons & 1 part flour to 2 parts water mixture) I covered my balloon template with a few layers of papier mache and waited 3 days (!) for it to dry enough to flip over and coat the other side.

Once the whole thing was dry (and the birthday party was a mere 2 days away) I popped the balloons inside, painted it and soon realized that I had made it so sturdy that not even a candy-hungry crowd of 4 year olds could hope to put a dent in it.

I put on my DIY Diva cap and headed back to the recycling bin and grabbed an empty cereal box and some packing paper. (+ some paints & a glue stick)

I glued the packing paper over the cereal box leaving one end open.

Loaded up the box with treats.

Sealed up that open end and painted the whole thing.

While the paint was drying I snagged a sturdy empty foil roll, tissue paper, a glue stick & packing tape.

Glued the tissue paper to the roll and then fake-oupaged it with the packing tape to create the pinata bat.

Once the cereal box was dry I added the features and my Adventure Time BMO pinata was ready to hang!

Success! BMO survived two full rounds of munchkin bashings before finally giving up the treats.

But what about that oh-so-sturdy papier mache Lumpy Space Princess?

She was excellent as birthday decor over the face painting table!

(those refurbished chairs look fab with the table, eh?)

Top save on the pinata. The original looks fab as a decoration. You’re such a cool mummy!

    1. Cheers for that! I try very hard to be a better parent & provide a better environment than what I had growing up and that definitely means there’s lots of love, fun and creativity flowing around my kiddo 😉
