Not the army anymore!

December 19, 2011

As a young German dude mein Mann had to do a compulsory year in the army. He kept EVERYTHING! Seriously, in our basement we have  boxes full of stuff like this:

Yay! Army rations from nearly 20 years ago! Edible? no Useful? no …but we can’t chuck ‘em out because they’re a “part of his history”…erm…historical hermetically sealed food…an heirloom our daughter will treasure for sure!

Whilst wading through yet another box of priceless army memories I stumbled across some rather interesting items…3 of which I transformed into this:

Can ya guess what this awesome skirt once was?

Army issue long johns that once warmed my hubby’s 19 year old bum! To make your own ultra comfy & freakishly unique skirt grab 3 pairs of long underwear …

chop off the legs…

trim any excess bits (get rid of that crotch…)

cut open one side seam on each of the legs & open ‘em up (you’ll  have 6 pieces)…

pin one side of 2 of your legs right sides together & “ankles” at the top…

stitch together…continue adding the legs until all six are sewn together into a circle…

…you could just use the existing elastic-y ankles as a waist band BUT….

grab one of the left over long john tops (if it doesn’t already fit your waist, it’s a cinch to take in with a couple of straight side seams )…

hmmm…I don’t require a peek-a-boo wee hole…

simply stitch it closed…

flip your new waistband over the skirt & pin…

sew ‘em together…

trim a bit & even out the bottom of the skirt…

hem the bottom of your skirt & that’s it! (I love my rolled hem foot!)

For some extra fanciness I added a doilie to the hip of my skirt….

Not the army anymore! – but what about the other long john tops…?

…give ‘em an easy lettuce hem & skully patch and you have a rockin’ new mini!

My skirt was such a success I chopped the legs off of my old long john pj’s, stitched ‘em together & made a cutie-pie skirt for our little mouse! *2 legs make a perfect baby-sized skirt & because the “ankles” become the waistband it only needs 2 seams & a hem – super quick to create!

…now that’s something to pass down…by the time she’s big enough to wear it, the skirt will be extra vintage….or…erm…possibly…dare I say…antique…?
