Simply Natural DIY Deodorant

After too many years of disappointment with the effectiveness of store bought deodorants, not to mention the toxic ingredients that can be harmful to your health and stain your groovy garments, I decided to give making my own underarm freshener a try!

Grab the recipe for my Simply Natural DIY Deodorant + discover if it really works too!

You’ll need: 1/4 cup (4 tbsp) Baking Soda – as I have sensitive skin I used a bit less, 1/4 cup (4 tbsp) Coconut Oil, 1/4 cup (4 tbsp) Arrowroot Powder (cornstarch works too), an airtight container and your fave essential oil if desired.

Pop the baking soda, arrowroot powder and coconut oil into a bowl and mix until smooth.

Add a few drops of essential oil and stir together. I absolutely love the fresh, clean smell of lemongrass oil!

Pop the lovely mixture into an airtight container and enjoy your simply natural DIY deodorant!

(as coconut oil melts in warm temperatures and I prefer to apply it more as a cream than a liquid I’ll be keeping mine in the fridge until the weather cools off enough to move it to the bathroom)

And just how do you use it?

Scoop out a small amount and rub it into your armpit.

Let your skin absorb it for a minute.

Enjoy your naturally freshened underarms!

But does it really work?

I have been using my DIY deo for the past week and am thrilled to announce that not only does it work better than any of the store bought deodorants I’ve ever tried it’s also long lasting, not at all powdery, leaves absolutely no residue on my clothing and, thanks to the lemongrass oil, smells phenomenal!

(I’ve gotten loads of compliments and queries about my “perfume” and the reaction is hilariously awesome when I tell my scent admirers that it’s my DIY deodorant!)

I found this DIY deoderant recipe left yellow marks in the arm pit area of my white shirts after awhile so I had to stop using it.

Then I found this stuff and it works PERFECTLY! It isn’t DIY but it’s the first deod I’ve found that actually worked for me. Thai salt stick deoderant. I use the one with cornstarch in my shoes and that is wonderful as well. I only have to put it on once every other day. I still have my first container, it is about 2 years old so it lasts a long time.

    1. I wonder what caused the yellowing as it’s the combo of aluminum in traditional deo + the protein in sweat that makes the yellow marks. I haven’t had any garment staining as of yet but I’ll keep an eye on it (stay tuned for my upcoming DIY stick deo tutorial – much better for sensitive skin!) 😀

I use basically the same thing without the coconut oil. I apply a small amount of the powder under my arms as well as under my bust (I’m rather well endowed). I also use it as a foot powder. I use tea tree oil and lavender essential oils for anti bacterial properties. Works great!

    1. Brilliant! I’m definitely trying the powder on my 32F chest 😀 Do you apply with a soft make-up brush?

Nope…just my hand. It’s a great foot powder too!

To be honest my friend, I gave up deodorant years ago… completely. The only thing I use is a pre-moistened alcohol pad (make my own) or a bit of antibacterial hand sanitizer. It’s an easy, instant solution to use as needed.

I work in an office so I have to smell good, right? And, I usually work out or walk during lunch.

What I noticed is that when you quit clogging your pores you quit stinking! All that smell is from backed up sweat glands. No more staining on clothes either.

I wish more people could handle the topic and I applaud you for taking a DIY stroke to it!

    1. Cheers Leona 😀 That is so true! I absolutely noticed a positive difference in my underarm skin mere days after using my DIY deo. I never sweat much or have a very strong natural odour but after only a week of going “natural” there was zero “sweat smell” at the end of the day and I find I sweat even less than I did before 🙂
