DIY Patchwork Denim Skirt Refashion

Patchwork denim is popping up everywhere (again) but why buy the overpriced designer versions or unethically mass produced fast fashion knock-offs when you can create your own completely unique, just your style looks for a fraction of the cost?

Grab the deets below behind my groovy scrapbusting sewing tutorial for a DIY Patchwork Denim Refashion:

Gather your denim skirt + a bunch of colourful scraps from your stash.

(as you’ll be securely stitching the scrappy patches in place using a variety of fabric types, styles, weaves and thicknesses is perfectly fine)

Chop off the bottom hem of the skirt for a deconstructed look.

To give the skirt a funky decolourized look roll and twist it up then secure with rubber bands and toss into a tub of bleach water. (the more bleach added to the water the faster the colour change will occur)

Grab all of my handy tips for bleaching fabrics here.

Leave the skirt in the bleach/water mixture until it reaches your desired colour then launder as usual.

Fab result and I love the fraying hemline too!

Arrange your scrappy patches on the skirt.

Stitch them on with a tight zigzag.

I also went ahead and changed the tacky waistband button rivet + added another fun embroidered pocket!

Here’s how to easily remove those button rivets.

And what about my awesome jean jacket patch?

I simply sewed on the groovy embroidered bit from a thrifted tea towel and then stitched some fab vintage border around the edges!
