How to relieve a migraine in minutes

I’m one of those lucky people who are visited by the migraine fairy at least once a week, ugh!

If you’ve never experienced the insanity of a migraine take a moment and try to imagine the worst hangover you’ve ever had multiplied by a thousand and lasting 2 – 3 days. Yup, these pulsating tension headaches are also accompanied by extreme light sensitivity and the friendly nausea elf who encourages a quick hug of the toilet bowl every few minutes whether your tummy is full or not.

I’ve spent years popping over the counter painkillers like ibuprofen and acetaminophen as well as perscription medication that knocked me out cold but nothing gave me the relief I needed to continue being productive during a migraine attack. My desperation led me to the internet where I discovered a heap of hilarious and terrifying “cures” as well as a quick remedy that was mentioned over and over again. As I had the magical ingredient in my kitchen and nothing to lose I gave it try – unbelievably, it worked! And so I present how to relieve a migraine in minutes:

A strong cup (or 3) of black tea is all it took to release the migraine vice from my head!

The science bit: Caffeine constricts blood vessels which can decrease pain.

The next time you start to get that queasy, throbbing pre-migraine coming on, try drinking a cup or two of strong black tea or coffee and close your eyes and rest for a few minutes.

(if your tummy is anything like mine I’d definitely recommend sticking to black tea as coffee could potentially increase your nausea)

I have been using this migraine fighting method for the past few weeks as soon as I feel the slightest twinge in my head and it has absolutely stopped that migraine beast from destroying my entire day several times without any medication. As everyone’s migraine experiences are unique yours may react differently and individual results will vary.

  1. I live in Calgary, which is subject to Chinook winds which cause migraines…either when the Chinook is starting or when it’s blowing out (or both). If I don’t catch it quick enough, I get the “hug the toilet bowl” nausea, as well. I’m a regular caffeine consumer, so the tea/coffee thing doesn’t work for me unless I take a multitude of ibuprofen which gives me a weird hangover. I use acupressure if nausea hits, though, and it works – just need to remember to do it. 🙂

    1. I grew up in Calgary and absolutely remember those gross “Chinook migraine” attacks 🙁 I’m totally going to check out some acupressure techniques, thanks for the tip 😀

    Do you normally drink coffee or tea? Because I heard if you drink coffee/tea on a normal basis this might not work.

    1. I’m not at all a high caffeine beverage drinker, a small latte in the morning (that’s mostly almond milk) is all the caffeine I have in a day 🙂 I stick to herbal teas and water to quench my thirst 😉

    1. Thanks for that Meg 🙂 Hopefully I’ve found a reliable quick fix for my migraines and am able to tick them off the list of annoying schedule-interrupters that need conquering 😉

  4. You can also try necking a few cans of cola, but make sure it’s the really energizing ones with lots of caffeine.

    1. Yup, from what I read pretty much any high caffeinated beverage *should* work to help release the pain 🙂
