Do I need to refashion this vintage dress?

I rarely try anything on while thrifting and prefer to simply hold a garment up to myself and do a quick mirror check before deciding to take it home or not. As most of my sustainable gear is purchased with a refashion idea already bouncing around my brain it’s never a waste of money if an item turns out to fit awkwardly.

Occasionally when I pop something on to take a “before photo” I realize that the garment just might be perfect as it is – such is the case with this simple yet stunning 1960’s evening gown I snapped up for only $1 during my travels to Toronto:

Do I need to refashion this vintage dress?

Take a closer look and let me know – do I need to refashion this vintage dress?

Do I need to refashion this vintage dress?

For a vintage dress it fits very well (it’s only a bit too big in the waist & hip areas), is fully lined and in absolutely perfect condition – dressed up with fancy hair, make-up and a pair of pretty heels would definitely look better than my work day slippers style but you get the basic idea of how it looks, amiright?

What do you think?

Does this fancy frock need a refashion or not and if so, what would you do to it?

all the tutes!

I look at that and see an amazing evening coat. I’d remove the zip, sew up the seam, cut right up the front and turn the decoration into a fastening. Beautiful score at any price, but for $1 … thrift shop luck was smiling on you that day!

  2. It seems a bit big so maybe just take it in a bit and I don’t know about the length. I think it’s too long. I would remove the sleeves. Good luck!

I think it’s quite lovely and would not change a thing! done hair and killer heels = stunning

Just fitted to you would be awesome! It’s a bit long, yeah, but that’s part of the fitting. However, be really careful if you shorten it at all! Be sure to do that last! It will look different aftet the rest is to part, including shoes, hair, and face. And if it’s not long enough, that sexy, full length slit in front won’t look as intense.

I would take the applique off the waist, spray paint it in a contrasting or metallic color, add it to a belt, and then wrap it around your waist & voila!

I just love the dress, but I would shorten it a bit.

I’d just tailor it a bit to improve the fit but otherwise, I agree – this doesn’t need a refashion at all!

  8. I like it as is!

  9. Epaulets.. this needs epaulets.

  10. Not sure if I like that length on you.

It is quite lovely just as is. I might be tempted to bring the arm holes up a bit just to make it more form fitting just in that spot.

  12. Judy says:

I would shorten it to just below the knee and add a bright coloured and or metallic belt to jazz up

It’s very nice as is, but I’d be tempted to maybe just do a little something with it 🙂

  14. Personally I think it looks great the way it is.
