Get to know marvelous Melissa and discover her top tips for thrifting and upcycling:
I’ve been following DIY/lifestyle blogs since way back in 2008 and could totally picture myself having one of my own. The Sweet Escape just started as a place for me to share things that inspired me that I found around the web.
Fast forward a few years and when I made the huge decision to quit my corporate creative gig for something a little different and more aligned with my true passions I decided to throw all my time and energy into The Sweet Escape as a way to show my abilities and grow my creative portoflio.
The idea of The Sweet Escape was to help me get opportunities as a freelance creative entrepreneur or secure a new creative gig and deep down I was hoping that The Sweet Escape would grow to stand on its own as a creative lifestyle brand.
It’s been 2+ years full of highs and lows with a 101 learning experiences. Something I never expected is all the amazing people I’ve met and new friendships I have because of the blog. The blogging community is amazing and it’s what led me to create Merry Magazine, a blogger-driven mega creative collaboration to share all things handmade.
Melissa’s Top 5 thrifting & upcycling tips:
1. Never walk into a thrift shop with specific expectations, keep your eyes & mind open
2. A fresh coat of paint or a can of gold spray paint are your best friends
3. Mix old with new to make your thrifted finds more current.
4. Only buy or make things you love and will actually use, no matter how great the deal is.
5. Do the job right the first time or you’ll just regret it later. Trust me.
A huge bear squeeze to my fellow quirky Canadian creator for sharing the story behind her inspirational blog and fabulous DIY tips!
