A Quick Refashioned Jumpsuit Upsize

I love love love jumpsuits but after my rather epic DIY jumpsuit fail last year I stuck to my thrifting karma to add to my collection.

Until this thrifty online score arrived:

I’m not exactly sure who this was made for but they most certainly had a much shorter torso than I!

After a bit of a think I came up with a quick fix that transformed that too tight crotch hugger into a loose & comfy all-in-one!

Here’s what I did to create A Quick Refashioned Jumpsuit Upsize :

I grabbed the jumpsuit, a t-shirt a couple of sizes too big for me, a zipper and some coordinating embroidered ribbon.

Arranged the zipper on the outside of the t-shirt and pinned it in place.

Stitched it on.

Cut a piece of the embroidered ribbon to size and placed it over the sides of the zipper for extra fanciness.

Stitched it on – successfully using my zipper foot for the first time in my 4-ish years of sewing!

Repeated with the other side of the zipper.

Then flipped the t-shirt inside out and carefully chopped out the fabric directly behind the zipper teeth.

Next, I snagged that jumpsuit and cut off that too short top as close to the elastic waist as possible.

Popped the t-shirt over the jumpsuit bottom with right sides facing and side seams aligned and pinned together.

Then zigzagged them together stretching the elastic waist as I stitched to match up with the length of the hem of the t-shirt.

Zigzagged over that outside seam for extra strength.

I’m quite positive that this technique would also work brilliantly to create a jumpsuit from a pair of comfy elastic or drawstring waist pants or sweats and a t-shirt!

And my now loose and lovely jumpsuit was ready for some interpretive dancing and singing with the kiddo!

(I am most definitely that weird mommy in the park that other kids flock to but the parents avoid and whisper about)

  1. Do you have any suggestions about loosening the crotch area without cutting the jumpsuit in half? I’d really love to keep my vintage jumpsuit in one piece, but geez, it’s like mega camel toe???.

    1. Without seeing the actual jumpsuit I’m not quite sure but here’s a few ideas:

      – most garments have at least a centimeter of seam allowance so if you only need a bit more room down below you could unpick the crotch & top of the inner leg seams and then stitch them back together as close to the fabric edge as possible

      – carefully unpick the waist seam (if there is one) to release that extra seam allownace fabric and then re-stitch the top & bottom parts together

      – try removing the elastic on the waist area (if there is any)

      – if you need to actually lengthen the torso of the jumpsuit then unpick the waist (or chop where desired) and add a strip of coordinating fabric

I removed the elastic from the waist and added elastic to the bottom of the legs (+ a few other tweaks) in my latest vintage jumpsuit transforming refashion and I absolutely love it 😀 https://awesomesauceasshattery.com/2015/07/22/my-jumpsuit-refashion-bias-binding-how-to/

Love the jumpsuit (and the interpretive dance!). I thrifted a jumpsuit a little while ago – mainly because it had a tiny elephant pattern on it. I didn’t realise I would look quite so much like an elephant IN it though! I always knew I would look ridiculous in it, and intended to make it into trousers, but they’re just not flattering on me – sadly. I haven’t actually cut it yet, but I’m thinking maybe peplum top/tunic instead? Plus lots of lovely elephant print left over!

    1. Sounds intriguing, maybe you wanna swap it with me for one of my creations or funky thrifted bits?

Wonderful refashion! And your little one will love you for being wacky and fun (until about 12- then it is iffy for a few years!).

    1. Hahaha! Cheers Robin – I’m dreading the moment when I am no longer considered hilarious & cool by my kiddo but am also looking forward to the hours of freedom my uncoolness will give me 😉

  4. Love what you did! A jumpsuit is on my thrift wish list…

    1. Thanks Darlene, I seem to have pretty good thrifting karma when it comes to jumpsuits but I think that’s because the other customers at my fave thrift shop absolutely do NOT share my *awesome* style 😉
