The Delightful DIY Dinosaur Costume

Has anyone else spied a dinosaur in the parking lot?

Here’s how to create your own fast moving stegosaurus from items you may already have around the house:

Grab a sweatsuit that fits your munchkin (or yourself!) and some coordinating material for the spikes & tail + fabric dye if needed.

I dyed my sweatsuit a groovy green along with the tail fabric + a shirt to wear under the hoodie.

Chop out a pile of diamonds from your coordinating spike fabric.

Pin a few to the center of the top of the hood with right sides facing.

Open up the hoodie & lay it on flat surface, mark the middle of the back & continue pinning on the diamonds in a neat row.

Leave a space just above the hoodie waistband for the tail.

Stitch straight down the middle of each diamond.

Et voila!

Fold the hoodie in half & match up the points of each diamond to form the triangular spikes.

Stitch the open edges of each triangle together.

Chop off any excess fabric & your stegosaurus spikes are complete!

Onto the tail: Grab your fabric + a few more spike diamonds.

I used a chopped sweatshirt sleeve from my stash & cut it into a rectangular shape.

Fold that fabric in half with right sides together & cut out your desired tail shape.

Sew on the spikes just like the hoodie.

Then stitch it all together!

Cut a hole in the space left below that last hoodie spike.

Pop your tail through the hole with the raw edges lined up.

Stitch together & your tail is almost done!

Stuff the tail.

Then stitch a piece of leftover fabric over the opening.

Grab some make-up in dino colours & paint on a fierce face!

And your dino is ready for stomping, roaring and staying cozy warm while celebrating Halloween or Karneval at an outdoor event!
