The Jumpsuit that just wasn’t meant to be – a refashionista fail

Not all refashions are winners and I usually wouldn’t share my hilarious failures but this one was simply too awkwardly bad to hide away & keep to myself.

Presenting The Jumpsuit that just wasn’t meant to be – a refashionista fail:

The idea was brilliant – transform a frumpy vintage dress into a stylin’ jumpsuit.

The method was solid in my head – but when put into practice was sorely lacking.

So without further ado here’s what I did and what I learned for my next (hopefully successful) attempt:

I chose this XL light and airy 1970’s frock and was certain I had enough fabric.

I chopped it under bustline.

1st major mistake: it should have been cut a bit lower than where I wanted the waist to be to allow for seam allowance

Then I took in the sides of the top for a better fit (no problem there).

I opened up one of the side seams of the chopped skirt (again no problem).

And chopped the skirt in half (still on the right track).

I then placed one piece on top of the other right sides facing and discovered the pieces were different sizes, ak!

2nd major mistake: Not realizing just how little fabric I was losing due to unevenness I proceeded and folded the 2 fabric pieces in half lengthwise

I snagged a pair of PJ pants and used them as template  to cut out my jumpsuit legs.

Then separated the leg pieces & folded them right sides facing.

Stitched the open sides together.

Popped one pant leg into the other with right sides facing and the crotch V’s lined up.

Sewed the V’s together.

Flipped the top over my (now obviously) too small jumpsuit bottoms and stitched them together.

*notice the wide band of fabric I had to add to the top to make it long enough to reach the waist of the pants? The original dress came with a moth-eaten matching jacket so (luckily?) I could salvage a piece from it.

I added the zipper the front and my sad attempt at a jumpsuit was complete!

It actually doesn’t look too bad if I’m seated and photographed through a bunch of filters.
