I hoot doilies…

October 6, 2012

Another quick use for Oma’s old doilies…

…they make fantastic owl eyes!

Here’s how to create your own hoot-y pillow in under 30 minutes:

To get started, snag some fabric for the body, scraps for the beak & eyeballs, a couple of round doilies, a pen & scissors

fold the body fabric in half, right sides facing, and sketch out a very basic owl shape

cut it out

You should now have a front & back piece, set them aside for a moment

place one of your doilies onto an eyeball scrap

stitch together around the center of the doily

repeat with the other doily & flip ‘em over…

trim off the excess & your owl eyes are complete!

arrange the eyes & beak on the front piece of your soon-to-be-pillow

pin on the beak & lightly mark where the edges of the doilies overlap it

stitch on the beak following the marks

trim off the excess

arrange & pin on the eyes

stitch them on – I’ve found that using a zigzag & spiraling towards the center from the outside edge provides an extra secure result

…and your owl face is done!

put your front & back pillow pieces right sides facing and sew together leaving an opening at the bottom for turning & stuffing

flip your pillow right side out, stuff & stitch up the bottom (quick tip: for a cheap stuffing supply in Germany get some 80x80cm Ikea Gosa Slan pillows – a mere €2.99 for a massive amount of pillow filling!)

et voila!

…toss it on your sofa with the rest of the funky cushions!
