A Simple German Waffles Recipe

In Germany it’s traditional to give the kiddos a Zuckertüte – sugarbag (nowadays called a Schultüte – schoolbag) on the first day of school.

It’s simply a colourful cardboard cone filled with sweets, trinkets and neat back to school supplies. Another popular German tradition (at least in our house) is waffles on the weekend:

Here’s the scrumptious recipe passed down from Oma:

You’ll need: 4 eggs, 2 tsp vanilla, 3 tbsp honey, 1.5 cups milk, 1.5 cups sparking water, 1/4 cup butter, 3 cups flour, 1/2 cup sugar 1/2 tsp baking powder & a pinch of salt

(Use a dairy free milk & gluten free all-purpose flour if you have food allergies like me)

mix together all of the wet ingredients

add all of the dry ingredients except the baking powder & mix well

add the baking powder

heat up the waffle iron you’ve had since university

dump a half ladle full of waffle mixture into the center

close the waffle iron & let it do it’s job for 2 – 3 minutes

open it up, peel the waffle off of the top & ladle on the next batch

we like to eat them plain or

with a side of yogurt
