Chuffed with my cuff!
April 17, 2012
with a pair of old trousers, some clever cuts & stitches you can make your own cuffed skirt in minutes!
Here’s how:
grab a pair of dowdy old trousers
chop the legs off about 15cms longer than you’d like your finished skirt to be
seam ripper (or simply cut) the inside leg & crotch seams
open up your crotch-free trousers…
pop on over to your machine & (using the remaining front & bum seams as a guide) sew straight down to the cut off ends of your almostacuffedskirt (follow the nice straight pinstripes if you got ‘em!)
slice off the excess fabric & heat up your iron…I know, I know…ironing is the absolute worst form of hausfrau torture BUT for a nice crisp cuff you gotta man-up & get to it…
keep your skirt inside out & turn the bottom up a little over twice the size you’d like your finished cuff to be…press with the iron
head back to your machine & stitch all around your turned & pressed hem
scoot over to the iron again *this time with your skirt right-side-out* fold up your cuff (it should cover the seam) & press the crap out of it!
a last trip to the sewing machine to tack your seams (stitching up the cuff along each existing seam)
you could be done after the previous step but I’ve found that tacking my seams isn’t enough to hold the cuff as crisply as I like it so I sew a final seam all the way around the top of the cuff
fertig! - would also work brilliantly with a pair of old jeans

Just found you via craft gossip. Love your project and your your crafted tutorial! You made me laugh out loud about ironing! I’ve always felt that way! I’ll be passing your blog info onto my sister too. we both enjoy the art of sewing and now reconstructing! Off to visit your blog!
This is a great idea. I know I have a couple pairs of pants that are now too short after going in the dryer. LOL Thanks for all the steps!! Popped over from Craft Gossip.
GREAT!
What a clever idea!
That is brilliant! I hate messing with trying to neatly overlap that pesky messy backseam.
