The Refashioned Sweet Lil’ Baby Dress

My little darling has a long torso & outgrows onesies at an alarming rate. They still fit easily over her head but are too short to snap closed at the bottom. I came up with a sweet n’ simple solution:

Here’s how to make The Refashioned Sweet Lil’ Baby Dress:

Grab a onesie & some fabric (mine is a piece from an old skirt). Chop the onesie in half, lay it on your fabric & eyeball how long you’d like the dress to be. Stretch the onesie across the fabric & mark the width. Cut the fabric at the stretched-onesie-width mark & with right sides together sew into a tube (this will be the skirt of the dress).

Put the skirt into the onesie right sides together. Stretch the onesie so it is even with the skirt & sew using a zigzag stitch. (I rarely measure or use more than 1 pin – stretching fabrics so they match up together as I am sewing is quick & easy – & works 96% of the time!)

You could be done once you’ve sewn the 2 pieces together, however I like to go one step further & use the fancy stitching options on my retro (1982!) machine. For this dress I used #15 & did the stitch in the ditch technique (sew on the outside of the dress directly in/on top of the seam line)

For a matching diaper cover: take the bottom half of the previously cut onesie & a sleeve from one of your T-shirts, sew them right sides together (like I did here) &  stitch in the ditch for extra fanciness!

2 new dresses in under an hour!

UPDATE:

I wasn’t really happy with the colour of the blue dress so I dyed it black. As the polkadots were printed onto the fabric they didn’t dye…cool baby cool! I added a few ruffles made out of t-shirt scraps & now my little gal is one rockin’ munchkin!

I wish I could do this but alas, I have three boys. I love the last one dyed black with the red ruffle. My babies were all long bodied too.
